Wanna read an interview with me?? there are a couple of really good ones out there right now.. there is one in the newest issue of Paper Cuts magazine.. and there is another in the new edition of (dis)perse .. a blog for experimental music heads..

both of these interviews are really good.. the Paper Cuts one was done early this year.. and is mostly about the Instagon release "Echophobic". The one for Auricular is really fresh and has lots about Instagon & Chaos theory.

MORNING TV with a side of Garage Jazz !

So.. this past weekend I worked my magick and arranged my band GARAGE JAZZ ARCHITECTS to appear on TV. It was really fun and cool.. but it was a morning news show, and so that meant being up early in the morning.. like 5am early.. in order to be there by 6am.. and ready to rock by 7am.. now i dont know about you..but rockin' at 7am is pretty tough to pull off.. (unless of course you are still rockin' from the night before) but none the less, we were able to pull it off.. GJA, is a trio that I play in.. you might know that.. but you might not.. so now you do.. its a trio.. 3 of us.. i play bass (duh), and Chad E. Williams plays guitar , and our fearless drummer Mark Halverson keeping it all locked in.. so we played.. it was fun.. it was early.. it was cool.. here are a couple of clips.. enjoy them!

the return of the blog

okay.. so I sorta made a new years resolution to give more attention and input/output to THIS blog.. and so far.. with the first 3 weeks of the year nearly over.. i have blown it.. so here i am to make amends and try to say something here. what? who knows.. i have no idea.. but maybe it will come to me in time.. This first part of the year has been really filled with depression from losing my job right before the holidays.. (for those of you that are just joining me here, i hope you already knew that.. or i guess that last sentence was pretty much a surprise!) But I have bounce back in my regular creative way by booking a batch of shows and creating some art.. and I am starting to un-earth Instagon recordings from the archives into the real world.. if you want to stay up on Instagon stuff.. perhaps checking out THE DEAMONS TUBE is a good idea.. i am gonna try to only rant HERE about ME.. and what I am doing.. not the Deamon. So. .welcome to Lobland 2010.. I am unemployed.. my shoulder hurts.. my beard is growing.. and Yvette is still wonderful and amazing (as we approach our 2 year marker too!) .. the OTHER band is going well (GJA), we have a great home, i have lots of friends, and my credit rating is still in good shape (so far!).. so i guess i really cant complain too much. ( I will try hard to not let this blog become a space for me to simply complain to no one.. but i cant promise anything. ). okay.. so thats good.. im gonna try to keep this from being a novel.. thanks for reading .. perhaps i will give you something else to read soon .. at least thats my working model for this thing.. stay tuned.. lob-sta-gone!

I am currently included in a group art show that is up at the Blue Lamp in Sacramento,CA. The Blue Lamp is a bar on the corner of N & Alhambra in Midtown Sac. that has regular live music most nights of the week. They show art regularly and have an opening that occurs as part of the monthly local Sac. 2nd Saturday Art Walk event. This past weekend was the opening for our show. The other artists involved in this group show are Amy Fort, Jim Busemeyer, & Glen Shackley. Amy and I have been in shows together before, she does sculpture art pieces with clay. and this was the first time I had been exposed to the other 2 artists, who both have really great work. I have 10 pieces showing.. mostly collage work, and one digital art print. This show will be up until the 2nd Saturday in July.

a few weeks ago we went out to Berkeley to see Frank Moore.
I was invited to be part of a jam session held at his house that was going to be broadcast live in Paris,France as part of a Global Video Streaming music marathon. We were only one of 4 artists performing from the USA! The jam was really amazing and had some really transcendental portions. The band consisted of me playing bass (of course), Frank Moore playing piano and doing vocals, Tarek on synths and accordian, and Jen and Ava doing noise with toys and small instruments and some vocalizing. It was also streamed live on Frank's web channel www.luver.com.

Garage Jazz Architects Return!!

my newest other band, The Garage Jazz Architects, will make its return to the stage next weekend on Saturday night in Updown Sacramento.. It will be our first live show in over a year.. we have some new things in mind and some favorites too.. we will play at least 2 sets.. maybe even 3 smaller ones instead. Its great that Jay is back to jam with us! Im really excited about it.. it different and refreshing for me to play something a little more regular than what happens with the Deamon, Instagon. In past shows we focused on the feel of raw garage jazz and played with some themes.. we did a few shows with Pink Floyd songs at the founddations.. we did some shows with TV themes as our concepts.. this time out we are talking about doing some commercial jingles and maybe some 80's Metal. Thats the news i have for you about it.. if you want to know more.. then come out to see it.. next saturday.. April 11.. CAFE @ THE GREENS, 1616 Del Paso Blvd, Sacramento,CA 6pm-9pm all ages.. free... BEER/WINE/FOOD available. .. what more could you ask for!?

short Beatles rant

any of you that know me are well aware that i am not a big fan of the Beatles. Recently my beautiful lady Yvette was mentioning this fact to one of her co-workers and was met with the question, "How can anyone not like The Beatles?" and so i was asked to respond for her, and this short rant spewed forth..

its really simple, OVERKILL.
there are plenty of other bands in the world, and they deserve some of
the radio airspace that has been monopolized by the Beatles for the last
30 years. i used to work in a used record store (for over 10 years) and
when you get more than 5 people a day coming up to you and asking how
much thier precious Beatles album is worth, and then continue to tell
you the story of how thier Aunt bought for them the night of the Ed
Sullivan show and blah blah blah.. you get kinda sick of it. and then
you start to notice that the people that DO like the Beatles are just
weird, they are abnormally happy all the time, like they are all on
Prozac,which they probably all are. And then, if you have any feelings
about the capitalistic prostitution of Rock n Roll, that can be blamed
soley on the Beatles. there was no such thing as a TSHIRT with a logo
before Beatles, there was no Elvis wigs, no Chuck Berry Boots, no Big
Bopper coffee mugs, no LIttle Richard bobble
heads. merchandising and the big money invasion into the selling of
RnR is directly attributed to the Beatles.. so when you are spending
your hard earned cash on that $40 tshirt at the next big concert you are
at, thank John & Paul. And lastly.. well they were not really a band..
they were a money making machine.. bands play together.. in the same
room.. the Beatles only played together as a group once (on a rooftop)
in the last 6 years of their exsistence, ONCE in 6+ years! that is
NOT a band,that is an investment. I like bands that play together
and show the integrity to stick it out. I could go on, but im sure you
are seeing my point, when you really start to THINK about the Beatles
and what they have accomplished.. it really puts a bad taste in your
mouth. it shows that we as consumers can be fed anything, and then
milked on it for the rest of our lives..

Dave Grohl

(so, im gonna try to get back into this whole blogging thing.. so here goes)

recently a friend of mine whom i have known for a number of years asked me this question about Dave Grohl. He asked ME because he respects my opinion and knowledge of the music industry and its traits. (because i had worked in record stores for 15 years, and have had my own label, and band for just as long).. so this was his question, and its followed by my reply.. its really not anything of importance..but it was something i felt worth sharing....

REPLY:

Well, i have not seen any of the Oceans movies.. so that comparison is not the best for me [grin]..but i do understand what you are asking.
I interviewed Henry Rollins once...and he told me that his movie appearances and acting gigs were mostly just to fund the books he was releasing at that time thru his publishing company by other writers he liked. (His publishing company closed...and he hasnt been in the movies in a long time.)

Unfortunately, Dave Grohl is a frustrated guitar player who ended up being a really good drummer...his drumming is where his real money has been made...he was the drummer for Scream before Nirvana.. and the Killing Joke and Queens of Stone Age gigs were cash cows.. he was a hired gun for both of those, as well as a small stint with Tom Petty, and Peal Jam, oh, and lets not forget Tenacious D. But his passion has been with writing songs.. and somehow because he was in Nirvana i guess, he had some interest and was signed to a major label and turned into a decent product. His songs are not all that.. but the few that seem to make the radio cut work .. and people like them.. the receptionist at my recent Eye doctors appt was blasting them when I got there.. it was odd. I felt old.
To me Dave Grohl has PhilCollins disease and should go back to what he is recognized for.. drumming.. but as he grows old and cannot keep the beat any more.. he will just be remembered as a guy that plays a loud guitar and writes bad pop tunes. Wikipedia has a pretty good bio on him, and it talks about his song writing and personal cassette releases prior to Foo.. and how Cobain was starting to let him write more for Nirvana..so who knows .. in the long run Curt saved us from hearing HIM sing those Foo songs. But dont be fooled, Grohl is a paid drummer...and if Foo didnt produce pop wonders he would be working someplace else. SO to answer your question.. I have no idea about any philanthropic endeavors that Dave is into, he could be into supporting indie stuff, but i dont know about it. I think that his commercially successful pop anthems are written to support and create ways to get songs that are not so catchy released. Foo have like 3 hit songs..
and like 6 or more albums. Its nice to be able to do what you want (write bad songs) and not have to work (drumming)...if only we could be so lucky huh?

So my friend Lisa sent me this video..she sent a few weeks ago, so its a little old and you might have seen it before...but i just had to post it, its probably the greatest prank i've seen posted in a year or so.. i really enjoyed this video and i hope you do too! The work that must of gone into the planning and stuff for this event just makes me excited to know that there are still real artists out there doing provocative and edgy conceptual performance pieces. this rocks.

this particular show i was SUBBING for KDVS regular DJ Dan, on his show FULL DISCLOSURE...Dan is swell, and its nice that he asked me to sub for him. He plays a pretty good mix of stuff, just like i do/would.. so we get along musically. He is usually on from 9:30 to NOON on KDVS, 90.3 fm in Davis,CA....streaming available at www.kdvs.org
